Before ADEC can alert you via email, you need to calculate the Kp Index you want to be alerted on for your area. You need to determine your magnetic latitude, and this will enable you to select the Kp index you're interested in.
Other points you may want to consider about Kp and viewing aurora:
- If you live in a city, light pollution may be a problem, so you'll only want to be notified on really good displays, you may want to increase the Kp by a unit or two.
- The Kp index does not gaurantee that when you're alerted there will
be a display, but it's a pretty good approximation.
- The Kp index is calulated by a neural net upto 45 minutes in advance of the event happening.
- Moonlight can reduce how effectively you can view the aurora.
- If the sky is overcast you won't be able to see the Aurora.
- The best time to see an aurora is at local midnight. However, the higher the index, the more likely you are to see it at other times of the night.
- If you're working with a Kp index that is close to the index for your location, the best direction to see the aurora is North.
- The higher the Kp index is, the more likely you see the aurora in
any direction including overhead.
Your email details will not be released or sold to anybody at all, you have my word. I hate spam like most people and like keeping my personal information to myself and I feel strongly on this point. The email addresses you provide will only be used for aurora alerting and information I occasionally send about the service provided.
